മരുഭൂമികള്‍
ഭൂമിയുടെ കരഭാഗത്തിന്‍െറ ഏകദേശം മൂന്നിലൊന്നും മരുഭൂമിയാണ്. മറ്റു പ്രദേശങ്ങളില്‍നിന്നും വ്യത്യസ്തമായി വളരെകുറഞ്ഞ അളവ് മഴയാണ് മരുഭൂമികളില്‍ ലഭിക്കുക. അതിനാല്‍, മിക്ക ചെടികള്‍ക്കും മൃഗങ്ങള്‍ക്കും ഇവിടെ വളരാന്‍ കഴിയില്ല. മിക്ക മരുഭൂമികളിലും വാര്‍ഷിക വര്‍ഷപാതം 400 മില്ലീമീറ്ററില്‍ താഴെയായിരിക്കും. 250 മില്ലീമീറ്ററില്‍ കുറവ് വാര്‍ഷിക വര്‍ഷപാതമുള്ളവ മുഴു മരുഭൂമികളാണ്. 250 മില്ലീമീറ്ററിനും 400-500 മില്ലീമീറ്ററിനും ഇടയില്‍ മഴ ലഭിക്കുന്നവയെ അര്‍ധ മരുഭൂമികള്‍ എന്നും വിളിക്കാം. ഭൂമിയിൽ മരുഭൂമി ഇല്ലാത്ത ഏക ഭൂഖണ്ഡം യൂറോപ്പാണ്.
ലോകത്തിലെ ഏറ്റവും വലിയ മരുഭൂമി ആഫ്രിക്കന്‍ വന്‍കരയുടെ വടക്കുപടിഞ്ഞാറായി സ്‌ഥിതിചെയ്യുന്ന സഹാറ മരുഭൂമിയാണ്. ഇതിന്‌ 90 ലക്ഷം ചതുരശ്ര കിലോമീറ്റര്‍ വിസ്‌തൃതിയുണ്ട്‌. സഹാറ പതിനായിരത്തോളം വര്‍ഷങ്ങള്‍ക്കുമുമ്പ്‌ പുല്‍പ്രദേശമായിരുന്നു എന്ന്‌ ഭൗമശാസ്‌ത്രജ്‌ഞര്‍ വെളിപ്പെടുത്തുന്നു. സഹാറയെ കൂടാതെ നമീബ്‌, കലഹാരി എന്നീ മരുഭൂമികളും ആഫ്രിക്കയില്‍ സ്‌ഥിതിചെയ്യുന്നു. അതായത്‌ ആഫ്രിക്കയുടെ മൂന്നിലൊന്നുഭാഗവും മരുഭൂമിയാണ്.
രാജസ്‌ഥാന്റെ പടിഞ്ഞാറുഭാഗത്തായി സ്‌ഥിതിചെയ്യുന്ന ഥാര്‍മരുഭൂമി, ഗോബി, കൈസിന്‍കും, തക്ലമകന്‍ എന്നിവ ഏഷ്യയിലെ പ്രധാന മരുഭൂമികളാണ്. ഭൂമിയിലെ ഏറ്റവും തണുത്ത മരുഭൂമിയാണ് ഗോബി. ഡെത്ത്‌ വാലി മരുഭൂമികള്‍ വടക്കേ അമേരിക്കയിലും അറ്റക്കാമ, പാറ്റഗോണിയ മരുഭൂമികള്‍ തെക്കേ അമേരിക്കയിലും സ്‌ഥിതിചെയ്യുന്നു. ഭൂമിയിലെ ഏറ്റവും വരണ്ട മരുഭൂമിയാണ് അറ്റക്കാമ. അറ്റക്കാമയില്‍ മഴ ലഭിച്ചിട്ട്‌ നാല്‌പത്‌ വര്‍ഷത്തിലേറെയായി. ഗ്രേറ്റ്‌ വിക്‌ടോറിയ, ഗ്രേറ്റ്‌ സാന്‍ഡി, ഗിബ്‌സന്‍, സിംസണ്‍ എന്നിവ ആസ്‌ത്രേലിയന്‍ മരുഭൂമികളാണ്.
മഞ്ഞുമൂടിക്കിടക്കുന്ന വന്ധ്യമായ പ്രദേശമായതിനാല്‍ അന്റാര്‍ട്ടിക്കയും മരുഭൂമിയായാണ്‌ ഗണിക്കപ്പെടുന്നത്‌. തണുത്തുറഞ്ഞ ദക്ഷിണ ധ്രുവപ്രദേശം വൈറ്റ്‌ ഡെസര്‍ട്ട്‌ എന്നാണറിയപ്പെടുന്നത്‌.
