1953 മുതൽ ആണ് സൈക്ലോൺ കൾക്ക് പേര് നൽകാൻ ആരംഭിച്ചത് . ഇന്ത്യൻ മഹാസമുദ്ര പ്രദേശത്തെ ചുഴലിക്കാറ്റുകൾക്കു പേര് നല്കുന്ന രാജ്യങ്ങൾ ഇന്ത്യ, പാകിസ്ഥാൻ, ശ്രിലങ്ക, ബംഗ്ലാദേശ്, തായ്ലാൻഡ്‌, മ്യാന്മാർ, മാലിദ്വീപ്പ്,ഒമാൻ.
