സംഗീതത്തിന്റെ ശബ്ദം പുറപ്പെടുവിപ്പിക്കുവാൻ ഉണ്ടാക്കുന്ന ഉപകരണത്തെ സംഗീതോപകരണം അഥവാ വാദ്യം എന്നു വിളിക്കുന്നു. തത്ത്വത്തിൽ സംഗീതാത്മകമായ ശബ്ദം പുറപ്പെടുവിക്കുന്ന എന്തിനെയും സംഗീതോപകരണം എന്ന് വിളിക്കാം. മനുഷ്യസംസ്കാരം ആവിർഭവിച്ച് തുടങ്ങിയ കാലം മുതലേ സംഗീതോപകരണങ്ങളുടെ ഉപയോഗവും തുടങ്ങിയിരുന്നു. ഓർഗാനോളജി എന്നാണ് സംഗീതോപകരണത്തെ കുറിച്ചുള്ള പഠനത്തെ വിളിക്കുന്നത്.
- തതവാദ്യങ്ങൾ : സ്വരവിസ്താരത്തിന് അനുയോജ്യമായ വീണ, തംബുരു, മൻഡോലിൻ, സിതാർ, വയലിൻ തുടങ്ങിയവയാണു് തതവാദ്യങ്ങൾ
- അവനദ്ധവാദ്യങ്ങൾ : തോൽ കൊണ്ട് മുഖം വലിച്ചുകെട്ടിയിട്ടുള്ള മുരശ്, മദ്ദളം, മൃദംഗം, മിഴാവ്, ചെണ്ട, തകിൽ, ഇടക്ക, തബല തുടങ്ങിയവയെല്ലാം ആനദ്ധവാദ്യങ്ങൾ (തുകൽവാദ്യം) എന്ന ഗണത്തിൽ പെടുന്നു
- സഷിരവാദ്യങ്ങൾ : ക്രമമായി വിന്യാസം ചെയ്ത ദ്വാരങ്ങളിലൂടെ വായു കടത്തിവിട്ട് ശബ്ദമുണ്ടാക്കുന്ന ഓടക്കുഴൽ, നാഗസ്വരം (നാദസ്വരം), ശംഖ്, കൊമ്പ്, കുഴൽ, ഷെഹ്നായ്, മകുടി, ഓർഗാൻ തുടങ്ങിയവയെല്ലാം സുഷിരവാദ്യങ്ങളാണു്
- ഘനവാദ്യങ്ങൾ : ലോഹത്തകിടുകൾ കമ്പനം ചെയ്തു് സംഗീതത്തിനു വേണ്ടി ശബ്ദം ചേർക്കുന്ന ചേങ്ങല, ഇലത്താളം, മണി, ഘടം എന്നിവയെല്ലാം ഘനവാദ്യങ്ങൾ എന്ന ഗണത്തിൽ പെടുന്നു.
