രാശിചക്രത്തിലെ ഒരു നക്ഷത്രഭാഗം കടന്നു പോകാൻ സൂര്യനു വേണ്ട കാലയളവാണു ഞാറ്റുവേല എന്ന് അറിയപ്പെടുന്നത്. ഞാറ്റുനില, ഞാറ്റില എന്നിങ്ങനെയും പേരുകൾ ഉണ്ട്. 27 ഞാറ്റുവേലകൾ ഉണ്ട്; അവയ്ക്ക് 27 നാളുകളുടെ (നക്ഷത്രങ്ങളുടെ) പേരാണ് നൽകിയിരിക്കുന്നത്. സൂര്യൻ ഏത് നക്ഷത്രത്തിന്റെ കൂടെ നിൽകുന്നുവോ ആ നക്ഷത്രത്തിന്റെ പേരിൽ ഞാറ്റുവേല അറിയപ്പെടുന്നു. സൂര്യൻ ഒരു നക്ഷത്രത്തിൽ നിന്ന് മറ്റൊന്നിലേക്ക് മാറുന്നതിന്റെ ഞാറ്റുവേലപ്പകർച്ച എന്നോ ഞാറ്റുവേലപോക്ക് എന്നോ പറയുന്നു. ഒരു ഞാറ്റുവേല ശരാശരി 13 1/2 ദിവസത്തോളം നിൽകും. ഞായറിന്റെ വേളയാണ് ഞാറ്റുവേലയായി മാറിയത്. ഞായിറ്റുവേളയെന്നും ഞാറ്റിലായെന്നുമൊക്കെ ഞാറ്റുവേലകൾക്ക് പറയാറുണ്ട്.
