The Vayalar Award is given for the best literary work in Malayalam. The award was instituted in 1977 by the Vayalar Ramavarma Memorial Trust in memory of the poet and lyricist Vayalar Ramavarma (1928-1975). A sum of ₹25,000, a silver plate, and a certificate constitutes the award originally. Now it is raised to a sum of ₹1,00,000. It is presented each year on 27 October, the death anniversary of Vayalar Ramavarma.


മലയാള സാഹിത്യ സംഭാവനകൾക്ക് നൽകുന്ന പുരസ്കാരമാണ് വയലാർ പുരസ്കാരം. മലയാളത്തിലെ ഒരു കവിയായിരുന്ന വയലാർ രാമവർമ്മയുടെ ഓർമ്മയ്ക്കായിട്ടാണ് ഈ പുരസ്കാരം രൂപവത്കരിച്ചത്. എഴുത്തുകാരും സാംസ്കാരിക നായകന്മാരും അടങ്ങുന്ന സമിതി നിർദ്ദേശിക്കുന്ന കൃതികളിൽ നിന്ന് വീണ്ടും തിരഞ്ഞെടുപ്പ് നടത്തിയാണ് വയലാർ അവാ‍ർഡ് നിശ്ചയിക്കുന്നത്. സർഗസാഹിത്യത്തിനുള്ള ഈ അവാർഡ് 1977 നൽകിയത്. എല്ലാ വർഷവും ഒക്ടോബർ 27 അവാർഡ് നൽകുന്നത്. വയലാർ അവാർഡിൻറെ സമ്മാനതുക ഒരു ലക്ഷം രൂപയും, കാനായി കുഞ്ഞിരാമൻ വെങ്കലത്തിൽ തീർത്ത ശില്പവുമാണ് പുരസ്‌കാരം. 2014 വരെ 25000 രൂപയായിരുന്നു.


Vayalar Ramavarma (March 25, 1928 – October 27, 1975), better identified as Vayalar, was an Indian poet and lyricist of the Malayalam language. He was known for his poems which include Sargasangeetham, Mulankaadu, Padamudrakal, Aayisha, and Oru Judas janikkunnu and for around 1300 songs he penned for 256 Malayalam films. He received the National Film Award for Best Lyrics in 1972 and was the winner of the Kerala State Film Award for Best Lyrics in its year of inception which he received three more times. He was also a recipient of the Kerala Sahitya Akademi Award for Poetry in 1962.

Jnanpith Award Winners List

Jnanpith Award is the oldest and the highest Indian literary award presented annually by the Bharatiya Jnanpith to an author for their "outstanding contribution towards literature". The Bharatiya Jnanpith, a research and cultural institute founded in 1944 by industrialist Sahu Shanti Prasad Jain of the Sahu Jain family, conceived an idea in May 1961 to start a scheme "commanding national prestige and of international standard" to "select the best book out of the publications in Indian languages".

The first prize was won in 1965 for G. Sankarakuruppu's collection of poems'Odakkuzhal'. G Shankara Kurup (The first poet in Malayalam literature) received the award in 1965. S.K. Pottakkad (1980), Takashi Sivasankarappilla (1984), MT Vasudevan Nair (1995), ONV. Kurup (2007) and Akkitham Achuthan Namboothiri (2019) are the other poets who won the Jnanpith Award for their contributions to Malayalam literature.
