ആറ്റിങ്ങൽ കലാപം

വിദേശാധിപത്യത്തിനെതിരേ ഇന്ത്യയിൽ നടന്ന ആദ്യ സായുധകലാപം.. 1721ലെ ആറ്റിങ്ങൽ കലാപം ഇംഗ്ലീഷ് ഈസ്റ്റ് ഇന്ത്യാ കമ്പനിക്ക് എതിരെ കേരളത്തിൽ നടന്ന ആദ്യത്തെ സംഘടിത പ്രക്ഷോഭമായി കണക്കാക്കുന്നു. ആറ്റിങ്ങൽ റാണിയുടെ അനുവാദത്തോടെ അഞ്ചുതെങ്ങിൽ ഇംഗ്ലീഷുകാർ നിർമ്മിച്ച കോട്ടയിൽ മേധാവിയായി എത്തിയ ഗിഫോർട്ടിന്റെ ധാർഷ്ട്യമാണ് കലാപത്തിന് കാരണമായി പറയുന്നത്. എന്നാൽ റാണിയുടെ അറിവോടു കൂടിയാണ് കലാപം നടന്നതെന്ന് ഒരുവിഭാഗം ചരിത്രകാരന്മാർക്ക് അഭിപ്രായം ഉണ്ട്. 721 ഏപ്രിലിൽ ആറ്റിങ്ങലിലെ നാട്ടുകാർ അവിടത്തെ ബ്രിട്ടീഷ് ഫാക്ടറി ആക്രമിക്കുകയും 140 കമ്പനി പടയാളികളെ വധിക്കുകയും ചെയ്തു. അഞ്ചുതെങ്ങ് കോട്ട പിടിച്ചെടുത്തു. ഇന്ത്യയിൽത്തന്നെ ബ്രിട്ടീഷുകാർക്കെതിരെ നടന്ന ആദ്യത്തെ ആസൂത്രിത കലാപമായിരുന്നു ഇത്. കൊച്ചിയിൽനിന്നു കൂടുതൽ സൈന്യത്തെ എത്തിച്ചാണ് ഈസ്റ്റ്‌ ഇന്ത്യ കമ്പനി കലാപത്തെ ചെറുത്തത്.
