സൂര്യനിൽ നിന്നുള്ള പ്രകാശവും ചൂടുമാണ് സൗരോർജ്ജം. സൗരോർജ്ജം ഉപയോഗിച്ച് നമുക്ക് വൈദ്യുതി ഉല്പാദനം സാധ്യമാണ്. സൗരവികിരണവും അതിന്റെ ഫലമായുള്ള കാറ്റ്, തിരമാല, ജലവൈദ്യുതി, ജൈവാവശിഷ്ടം തുടങ്ങിയവയെല്ലം പുനരുപയോഗ ഊർജ്ജ സ്രോതസ്സുകളിൽപ്പെടുന്നു. സൂര്യനിൽ നിന്നും വരുന്ന ഊർജ്ജത്തിന്റെ വളരെ ചെറിയ ഭാഗം മാത്രമേ ഉപയോഗിക്കപ്പെടുന്നുള്ളൂ. 174 പീറ്റാവാട്ട് ഊർജ്ജം സൂര്യനിൽ നിന്നും ഭൂമിയിയുടെ അന്തരീക്ഷത്തിന്റെ മുകൾതട്ടിലെത്തുന്നു എന്നാണ് കണക്കാക്കപ്പെട്ടിരിക്കുന്നത്. ഇതിൽ ഏകദേശം 30 ശതമാനത്തോളം തിരിച്ചു പ്രതിഫലിക്കപ്പെടുന്നു. ബാക്കി വരുന്നവ മേഘങ്ങൾ, സമുദ്രങ്ങൾ, കരപ്രദേശങ്ങൾ എന്നിവയാൽ ആഗിരണം ചെയ്യപ്പെടുന്നു. ഫോസിൽ ഇന്ധന അധിഷ്ഠിത സാങ്കേതികവിദ്യകളിൽ നിന്ന് വ്യത്യസ്തമായി, സൗരോർജ്ജം പ്രവർത്തന സമയത്ത് ദോഷകരമായ ഉത്പാദനം നടത്തുന്നില്ല
