Kerala is the land of kera or coconut. It is a never-ending array of coconut palms; sun blanched beaches… enchanting backwaters cruised by kettuvallams (rice barges); magical monsoon showers; rich diversity of flora and fauna; misty mountains of the Western Ghats; fragrance of spices and a plethora of art forms;. Kerala Excise department comes under the Govt. of Kerala, Ministry of Excise. The department is tasked with enforcing rules regarding the sale, licensing, control of anything that uses alcohol. it is also responsible in preventing the sale and smuggling of Cannabis, heroin etc. along with the police. The principal duties of the Department are protection, augmentation and collection of Excise Revenue and enforcement of the above acts and various Rules made there under. The Department prevents leakage of revenue, and exerts effective control on the abuse of liquor and Intoxicating Drugs.

The Department is administering laws related to Liquor, Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances, Medicinal Preparations containing alcohol and narcotic drugs, etc. The senior officers are drawn from the IPS, IRS as well as the IAS.
